Think Big – Building from Scratch

Saga Fitness is a small spa/fitness consulting company with a global reach. In the last 10 years we have worked in Bali, Indonesia, in Cancun, Mexico, in Hua Hin, Thailand, in Washington DC, US, in Hawaii, US, and in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We are still going strong, exploring projects in Florida, US, and Vietnam.

We – thanks to our expert colleagues and associates – keep doing innovative, functional and well-functioning spa and wellness centers, destination spas and day spas.

Reputation as an Industry Leader

The reputation you built for your destination or day spa is a challenged every day by your competition. Clients coming to a resort or spa and taking advantage of the spa facilities are experienced in receiving spa services. When they go home they want to brag about the fabulous time they had on vacation and not just about being refreshed and want to continue these treatments. Sharing the experience and telling about a new and excellent treatment or healing modality they had at your spa caps off the telling.

The competition is high for attracting clients and ones that have memorable experiences are likely to return. If the stories they tell are good enough, these satisfied guests will send friends your way. The hard part for you is making sure you are offering the highest quality and desirable treatments.

Creativity and upgrading are your best resources for keeping ahead of the curve. Some of the newest therapies being offered are some of the oldest healing arts. Adding and changing services while maintaining the highest quality in core offerings keeps guests interested and coming back.

When you are ready to begin planning for expanded service offerings or to refresh the programs offered at you spa, an experienced consultant would facilitate your process as well as promote the best possible training. Having access to resources and contacts, and being knowledgeable about industry trends, a professional spa consultant can help you design a suite of services that fits your operation.

At Saga Fitness, we are seeing the successful introduction of services that include Sound Healing, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch Meditation, Posture Training and others. We work with Dr. Buathon Thienarrom of the Sukkasart Hua Hin in Thailand for developing spa concepts that incorporate new in depth training for these modalities.

Knowing how to include and implement new therapies with the highest quality in your operation is key to the success of your offering. A program of services that incorporates unusual and healing treatments will enhance your reputation as an industry leader. Guests who experience new services will spread the word that your spa is the one to go to for vacation or to visit for ongoing benefits while at home.

Tibetan Singing Bowls for Healing

Some of the best new ideas are old ones when it comes to healing practices. Healing professionals are reintroducing ancient methods like the Tibetan Singing Bowls into their practices. Use of singing bowls originated in the pre-Buddhist Shamanic Bon Po culture in the Himalayan Mountains.

Traditionally, the bowls were made of seven sacred metals, corresponding to the seven planets: GOLD- Sun, MERCURY- Mercury, IRON- Mars, LEAD- Saturn, SILVER- Moon, COPPER- Venus and TIN- Jupiter. The iron originally used to make these bowls was from meteorites found high up in the mountains.  The tonal vibration of each metal contributes to a complex blended sound when a bowl is activated.

To activate the sound, a wooden rod is lightly dragged around the edge or sides of a bowl.  Often several bowls of different sizes and therefore different tonal ranges are rung together creating a “sound bath”.  The ringing induces a deep relaxation state in a listener.  Healers say the vibrations activate water molecules in a person’s cells to promote healing.

The healing power of the bowls was shrouded in mystery.  Unlike other Tibetan practices that were well documented, as part of the Tibetan Buddhist Cannon, there was nothing written about the healing powers or spiritual practices of the singing bowls.  Mention of the Tibetan bowls was limited to its use by pregnant women for eating. Metals in the bowl would leach into the woman’s food in very low levels giving her a homeopathic dose of minerals.   It is hard to believe that a precious handmade object as this was intended only as a food container.

A deeper look at Tibetan culture reveals the Singing bowls as much more. These bowls were found in both monasteries and private homes.  The highest Lamas were using them in ritual offerings to their Gods and Deities, but it was forbidden to talk about these bowls, even within the monasteries themselves. It is said that the highest Lamas used these bowls for their rituals to travel to another level of consciousness. The singing of the bowls deepened their meditations.

Practitioners perform sound baths for groups of people or for individuals. Using the singing bowls in a clinical or spa setting prior to performing physical treatments helps clients to relax deeply.  This in turn enhances the benefits of treatments that follow.

Taking a sound bath can be a relaxing or spiritual experience.  This is something our ancestors knew and we are learning anew.

A vineyard and a destination spa

Godspeed Vineyards is an artisan grower in the Mt. Veeder Appellation of Napa Valley situated at an altitude of 1500ft. At their Mt. Veeder estate, Larry Striker has over time sold his world-class fruit to recognized wineries including Ed Sbragia, Mayacamas, Robert Craig, William Hill, and Newton & Monticello. Since 1990 Larry has taken advantage of his exceptional vineyard by bottling half his production under his own label. Three wines are produced at Godspeed: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Trinity. All three are made in a very elegant, almost “European” style with an emphasis on the vineyard’s unique micro-climate, as expressed in the wine’s balance and fruit element.

The vineyard is the project of the Larry Stricker family. Larry is an acclaimed architect who has created world-class resort hotels, including the Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona; the Marriott Desert Springs Resort and a series of Hawaiian properties including the Halekulani, Kahala Resort, Kapalua Bay Hotel and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. Saga Fitness worked with Larry Striker to design and develop destination spa facilities and programs at his hotel projects.

A great destination hotel and spa is the result of planning, creative design, and good management. A great wine starts with the soil and attention to detail at each step of the wine making process. Larry continues to merge these skills is his architecture and wine making. Click here for additional information about Godspeed Vineyards: http://www.godspeedvineyards.webs.com

ZenNa Tai ~ Healing Thru Transformative Touch

“It is far better if we can heal ourselves without relying on doctors and health practitioners. And wouldn’t the world be a much nicer place if it was filled with healthy, happy people?” – Dr. Buathon

After several years of practice as a healer, Dr. Buathon Thienarrom Ph.D., has developed an integration of healing methods to formulate her own healing technique called ZenNaTai, which means the state of freedom and emptiness connected to each individual’s own manifestation of health and well-being. Through her comprehensive background in nursing, psychology and health sociology, Buathon has been able to grasp the fine balance between traditional/alternative medicine and modern medicine. She fully understands the need for harmony between body and mind in order to achieve well-being from physical and mental development, which are the keys to personal & spiritual fulfillment. Hence, ZenNa Tai was created.

ZenNa Tai is a powerful healing technique that restores, rebalances & rejuvenates the entire body as a whole. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizing functional channel on the front part of the body which stores the yin energy hidden deep within the interior body where the flow of chi is circulated. It comprises a combination of: Taoist Chi Massage, breathing techniques and posture analysis. Taoist Chi Massage focuses on the abdominal area (the center of chi or energy) which is connected to the internal organs that represent elemental emotion and personality. Breathing promotes better circulation or chi (energy) flow, releasing physical tensions or blockages in the body and training the mind to sustain inner harmony. Posture analysis evaluates the spinal column, gait and other relative muscles and then custom exercises are created that improve sitting, standing, and walking. The combination of these therapies will ensure an overall healing experience in spirit, mind & body creating a harmonious environment for the very best in health and well-being.

Some of the benefits are:

  • Better breathing qualities
  • Cranial tension release
  • Enhances concentration
  • Stimulates lymphatic flow and detoxifies the body
  • Improves digestion
  • Induces deeper states of relaxation and a more peaceful mind

Dr. Buathon is a spa professional who is always seeking to deliver an integration of the body, mind and spirit through good health, with her with her background in Nursing, Psychology and Health Sociology, Buathon approaches health and well being in a holistic way.

Doing Zen

“Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.” ~Zen proverb

In the chaos of the modern world, there is a beauty in simply doing.

We’re buffeted wildly by whatever emails, conversations, news, events, demands, that are going on around us. Our minds become a constant deluge of thoughts dwelling in the past, worries of the future, distractions pulling us in every direction.

Today more than ever we share countless communications amongst ourselves and others. We can multi-task at the speed of light and connect domestically and internationally all at the same time in this savvy era of technology. This has created wonderful ways to keep information at our finger tips. Nonetheless it has also given us ways of distracting ourselves and overindulging at work and play, because of our need to stay connected. Therefore sometimes in our quest to be in touch we found ourselves out of touch.

But all of that melts away when we focus on just doing.

It doesn’t matter what the doing is: sitting, walking, writing, reading, eating, washing, talking, snuggling, playing. By focusing on the doing, we drop our worries and anxieties, jealousies and anger, grieving and distraction.

There is something profound in that simplicity. Something ultimately heart-rendingly breath-takingly gorgeous.

“When walking, walk. When eating, eat.” ~Zen proverb

You are in the middle of your day today, and you’re caught up in the sandstorm of thoughts, feelings, to-dos, meetings, readings, and communications of this day.

Pause. Breathe. Let all of that fade.

Now focus on doing one thing, right now. Just choose one thing, and clear away all other distractions. Seriously, clear it all away. Turn off your Internet. Stop reading this article (OK, read a couple more sentences, then close your browser!).

Let all thoughts about anything other than the doing also fade away. They’ll come up, but gently make note of them, and then let them go. And return to the doing.

If you’re washing a dish, do it slowly, and feel every sensation. If you’re eating a fruit, taste it, feel the textures, be mindful of your hunger or lack of it. If you’re writing something, pour your heart into that writing, become the writing, inhabit the words.

Just do.

The rest of the world becomes meaningless distraction. It’s just you, and your doing.

And you realize: this is all that matters. In this, there is everything.

“Zen is not some kind of excitement, but concentration on our usual everyday routine.” ~Shunryu Suzuki
